At least 28 people were killed in a bus accident in western Nepal. A police spokesman said at least 16 other inmates were injured when the long-distance bus strayed off the mountain road in Mugu district. The vehicle crashed hundreds of meters into a ravine.

According to the police, the bus was on its way back from Nepalgunj to Gamgadhi. Information on the cause of the accident has not yet been given. It is also unclear how many passengers were on the bus in total. Rescue workers therefore fear that more dead will be found. Some of the injured are in critical condition and are being transported to various hospitals by air, the police spokesman said.

Presumably migrants on their way home

It is believed that many of the victims are Nepalese migrants who were on their way home from India to spend the Hindu Dashain festival with their families. During the festive season, there is usually a lot of traffic in Nepal.

Accidents often happen in mountainous Nepal. The poor condition of vehicles and country roads as well as narrow, winding roads are often to blame. At least 45 people have been killed in traffic accidents since Sunday.
