Bundesliga: Wolfsburg with a draw against Frankfurt, Bayern in first place – sport

VfL Wolfsburg lost its lead in the Bundesliga in the game against its former coach Oliver Glasner. The Austrian and his new club Eintracht Frankfurt drew a happy 1-1 (1-0) draw in Wolfsburg on Sunday. With his equalizing goal in the 70th minute, Wout Weghorst prevented at least VfL’s first defeat of the season. His Dutch compatriot Sam Lammers (38th) had brought Eintracht into the lead in the first half. Because of the worse goal difference, Wolfsburg is in second place with 13 points behind FC Bayern Munich with the same number of points.

In the end, no one was satisfied in front of 9,266 spectators: Wolfsburg mourned many missed opportunities to win the fifth season. And after five Bundesliga games, their DFB Cup and the Europa League opener against Fenerbahce Istanbul, Frankfurt are still waiting for their first ever success with Glasner.

The 47-year-old had trained the VW club in the past two years with great sporting success and high football recognition value. Not least because of his differences with sports director Jörg Schmadtke, he left Wolfsburg and even preferred to play with Eintracht in the Europa League instead of with VfL in the Champions League. The Wolfsburg decided not to say goodbye to the Austrian on Sunday evening, but his return was very cordial. He spoke for a long time, especially with managing director Tim Schumacher and goalkeeping coach Pascal Formann.

The exploitation of opportunities makes Wolfsburg to create

In the past few weeks, Glasner had to realize that he did not necessarily improve in terms of sport with his move. When he returned to Wolfsburg, it initially looked as if VfL would overrun Eintracht. After a header chance from Josuha Guilavogui (4th), a nice attack via Dodi Lukebakio, Luca Waldschmidt and Kevin Mbabu (12th) and a crossbar hit by Wout Weghorst (16th), VfL could have led very early. The fact that they did not take advantage of these opportunities took revenge.

Because Frankfurt got better, especially Filip Kostic and Daichi Kamada in the attacking midfield, VfL hardly got under control. Although the game against Fenerbahce did not take place until Thursday evening, Glasner decided not to change his starting line-ups. It is currently more important to him that his team settles in better than the rest breaks for some highly stressed players.

After four changes before the game, the new Wolfsburg coach Mark van Bommel also replaced striker Lukas Nmecha at the beginning of the second half. Nevertheless, there was still a problem that Glasner often complained about during his time in Wolfsburg: the exploitation of opportunities. Weghorst missed his second big chance in the 54th minute. The Belgian Lukebakio (56th) and Maximilian Arnold with a free kick (69th) failed each to Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp.

A minute later Weghorst was on the spot and shot from an acute angle between two opponents and the post into the Eintracht goal. At some point, however, the Frankfurt relief became too little and the pressure from VfL too strong. Even with the 1-1 draw, Eintracht was well served after 90 minutes. In stoppage time, a Wolfsburg hit was not recognized because of offside.
