Bundesliga: Stuttgart draws ahead of Bayern championship celebrations

Status: 08.05.2022 8:21 p.m

VfB Stuttgart, threatened with relegation, earned a deserved draw in the Bundesliga Bayern Munich before the championship trophy handover. This means that VfB is basically sure of relegation place 16.

On Sunday (May 8th, 2022) champions Bayern Munich and VfB Stuttgart parted ways 2-2 (2-1). Tiago Tomás gave the visitors an early lead on matchday 33 (8′), but the subsequent pressure from Bayern resulted in an own goal from Konstantinos Mavropanos (35′). Thomas Müller turned the game around for the record champions (44′), but VfB striker Sasa Kalajdzic was also on the top scorer list (52′).

Due to the draw of Stuttgart Arminia Bielefeld is now as good as relegated. Stuttgart is still 16th with 30 points, DSC is penultimate with 27, but has a much worse goal difference. In the meantime, VfB can basically no longer reach 15th place, because Hertha BSC (33 points) again has the clearly better hit record than Stuttgart.

Stuttgart is for Bayern just before kick-off trellis

Before the start of the game, VfB Stuttgart Munich showed their respect and stood guard. It was completely different in the early stages of the game.

Because suddenly Stuttgart’s Omar Marmoush had a great chance to take the lead after a high ball in the run. Tanguy Nianzou sprinted but had a foot between them at the last moment (7th).

High balls lever out Bayern, Munich defiant

And high balls over the Bayern chain remained the method of choice for VfB. Again, Nianzou was outplayed, again Marmoush put in the turbo and gave it to Tomas, who threw the ball under the crossbar with a fantastic direct acceptance.

Of course, the people of Munich didn’t like the prospect of a spoiled championship celebration. And so the FCB itself gave full throttle. Müller only hit the crossbar (12th), Leon Goretzka missed another top-class goal (13th). After conceding, Bayern were superior and had a good 75 percent of ball possession.

VfB failed to convert chances – Nianzou with problems

VfB, who at least theoretically tried in a 3-4-3 not to open up space for Munich’s wingers Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman, were lurking for a counterattack.

In fact, this approach could have led to the 2-0 for the guests, but as so often this season, VfB also missed this opportunity. Marmoush missed his second big chance – clear in front of Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer – after Nianzou had again revealed himself to be a weak point (23′).

Growing Bayern pressure too much for lurking Stuttgart

But Bayern kept pushing and was rewarded before the break: Joshua Kimmich, who played his 200th Bundesliga game, hung up for Gnabry, whose conclusion was straddled by Stuttgart’s Konstantinos Mavropanos over his own line to make it 1-1. And then Müller used Dayot Upamecano’s pass with the pike to give Munich the lead – the game turned.

Kalajdzic header to equalize – Munich reveals deficiencies

In the dressing room, VfB coach Pellegrino Matarazzo apparently found the right words, because after the restart, Stuttgart tried their best.

After Bayern’s Müller missed another big chance on the post (51′), the guests cheered: Sosa hit the cross, Nianzou lost the header duel with Kalajdzic. Only a little later, the latter could have turned the game upside down again, but Kalajdzic failed to get in front of Neuer (54′).

Bayern revealed weaknesses in defense. Talent Nianzou, in particular, often looked unhappy, and he finished work after a good hour. He was replaced by Niklas Süle (63rd), who will move to Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer in the summer.

Brave Stuttgart offers Bavaria more than just foreheads

Stuttgart, driven by the tight situation in the table basement, offered Munich more than just the forehead in the final phase. Substitute Philipp Förster from Stuttgart missed two top-class goals himself (75th/81st).

In a final phase with open visors, VfB keeper Müller sent Robert Lewandowski’s shot to the crossbar (77′) – goal number three for the hosts. Bayern’s Kingsley Coman saw the red card for an assault on Mavropanos (90 + 5).
