While regular guest Denmark wants to follow in the footsteps of its 1992 European Championship title, Slovenia is taking part in the tournament for only the second time ever since 2000.

Slovenian midfielder Timi Max Elšnik can’t wait: “Timi Max Elšnik, Slovenian midfielder: “I hope we can start the tournament with a win. We know the Danes very well, and we know ourselves too. There is not much room for surprises. To win the game, we have to be on their level physically, and then we have a chance. We have to be focused from the first to the last minute.”

Lineups:

  • Slovenia: Oblak – Janza, Bijol, Drkusic, Karnicnik – Gnezda Cerin, Elsnik, Stojanovic – Sporar, Mlakar, Sesko
  • Denmark: Flattery – Vestergaard, Christensen, Andersen – Kristiansen, Höjbjerg, Hjulmand, Bah – Eriksen – Wind, Höjlund

One man in particular is the focus of the cameras: Christian Eriksen. The Dane collapsed on the pitch at the 2021 European Championship, resulting in a drama about sheer survival.

The team mates stood around the midfielder with anxious looks on their faces, and CPR was performed. After anxious hours and days, the relieving news finally came: Eriksen is fine!

Denmark with outstanding record against Slovenia

Eriksen was back on the pitch in 2022 – and now wants to attack again with Denmark in this very special tournament. The omens are certainly good for the Nordic countries. The Danish selection has won five of the six duels with Slovenia so far, and the sixth game ended in a draw.

And Denmark’s squad is well-suited to success. There are big names in the starting eleven, and there are also some (former) Bundesliga players, including defender Andreas Christensen.

The giant is looking forward to the start – and sets a clear course of action: “A good start is always incredibly important, even if the first game feels a bit strange. As a team, we are incredibly good. We have a lot of good individual players and a lot of good players who play at a high level every day, but as a team we are simply better when we stand together and do things right.”
