In the 100th Bundesliga turf duel, Schalke 04 fought for a draw against Borussia Dortmund. A racy duel ended on Saturday (03/11/2023) in the Gelsenkirchen Arena with 2: 2 (0: 1).
So Dortmund has after Out in the Champions League with a 2-0 loss at Chelsea also suffered a setback in the Bundesliga. The goals of Nico Schlotterbeck (38th) and Raphael Guerreiro (60th) were not enough for the ninth league win in a row. With 50 points now, BVB lost ground to leaders Bayern Munich (52). Schalke 04, who equalized twice through Marius Bülter (50th) and Kenan Karaman (79th), have now been unbeaten in seven games – but are penultimate with 20 points.
The hosts started with a compact 4-2-3-1 and were primarily concerned with security in the early stages. Nevertheless, the “Royal Blues” had the first big chance of the game. Schlotterbeck advance makes Dortmund cheer
Dortmund, who had to cope with numerous offensive failures in particular, needed some warm-up time to get in the direction of Schalke Tor. But then things got tricky for the hosts almost every minute. Goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann had to clear twice in dire need against Donyell Malen (30th) and Marius Wolf (37th). But then he too was powerless: Schlotterbeck used the ample space in midfield, went to the edge of the penalty area and finished with a shot into the bottom right corner to make it 1-0.
BVB continued to dictate events until the break and not much indicated a Schalke comeback on offense. But that came right after the restart. After winning the ball on the center line, Zalazar made the game fast on the right with a pass to Michael Frey. With a cross pass, he found Bülter perfectly, who made it 1-1 with his sixth goal of the season.
BVB strikes back after equalization
The Dortmund shocked but not too much. With their tall full-backs and a preponderance in the center, the visitors remained the dominant team. Shortly after the equalizer, Emre Can found Guerreiro on the half-left with a clever pass and the completed one was ice-cold to make it 2-1.
Jamie Bynoe-Gittens even had the preliminary decision on his feet after a counterattack, but narrowly missed (65′). Dortmund seemed to be the more present team again. But Schalke 04 didn’t give up and still had their action when Karaman nodded a Bülter cross into the goal to make it 2-2. The “Royal Blues” almost landed the really big coup, but BVB goalkeeper Alexander Meyer parried a shot by substitute Eder Balanta from close range (88th).
Schalke 04 has to go to Augsburg
On matchday 25, Schalke is challenged at FC Augsburg (Saturday, March 18, 2023 at 3:30 p.m.). Three hours later, Dortmund receives 1. FC Köln.
