Bundesliga relegation: HSV shocks Hertha

Hamburger SV shocked Hertha BSC in the first of two relegation games. The Hanseatic League won 1-0 in the capital on Thursday (05/19/22).

Hamburg’s Ludovit Reis scored the winning goal with a cross ball (57′). This put Tim Werner’s team in a very good starting position for the second leg in four days. The game was characterized more by tactics and less by created goal chances.

Good mood – few chances

Right from the start, the 75,000 spectators in the sold-out Berlin Olympic Stadium created a great atmosphere, but little of it made it onto the pitch. Both teams acted defensively in a very disciplined manner and with little risk going forward. Only after a good half hour did Robert Glatzel test Hertha keeper Oliver Christensen with a deflected shot. As a result, the guests acted more courageously, but without scoring. Berlin’s Ishak Belfodil scored a goal before half-time, but it was rightly disallowed for being offside.

The referees were examining a situation for a long time when the ball jumped into Peter Pekarik’s hand. However, after studying the video images, referee Harm Osmers and colleagues had previously recognized a handball from Hamburger Rohr.

Hertha coach Felix Magath brought Stevan Jovetic into the second period, with whom Berlin’s attacking game was clearly enlivened. But even his promising actions were not crowned with a goal for the hosts. Only Belfodil finished in the 61st minute in the right half of the penalty area after a nice solo, but found his master in HSV goalie Daniel Heuer Fernandes.

Reis flanks – and hits

Surprisingly, but not undeservedly, he went Hamburger SV in the lead: Reis initiated an attack himself and worked his way forward with a one-two with Muheim on the left. His cross was probably intended for the box – but it turned dangerously into the far corner, the ball flew over keeper Christensen and hit the top right with the help of the inside post. “We enjoy the whole thing because we deserve it. That’s the nice thing, we’ll take the euphoria with us. We’re the youngest team in the second division, it’s worthy of all honor to survive here,” said Hamburg coach Walter after the match Game. His captain, Sebastian Schonlau, thanked the Hanseatic supporters who had traveled with him: “It was phenomenal how the fans pushed us forward.”

The Bundesliga-16. Hertha have their backs to the wall and in the second leg have to offer a lot more attacking than on Thursday in order to prevent the seventh relegation in the club’s history and the first of coach Felix Magath. The HSV icon is threatened with this humiliation with his old love of all people. After the game, he said: “We acted like a Bundesliga club. But so did HSV. HSV now has a little better chances. But we’re not going to Hamburg without a chance. I still believe that we can turn things around in Hamburg.”
