SC Freiburg has lost ground in the hunt for leaders Bayern Munich. Coach Christian Streich’s team lost 3-1 (0-0) to RB Leipzig on Wednesday evening. Now the Breisgauer, who had recently won three times in a row, are four points behind the record champions. RB defender Mohamed Simakan (54th), Christopher Nkunku (56th) with his twelfth goal of the season and Emil Forsberg with a penalty kick (78th) brought the Freiburg team their third defeat of the season, Lukas Kübler (66th) scored for the guests.
Previously, the string team had only lost to Bayern (0:5) and Borussia Dortmund (1:3). “Overall, the performance was just not good enough,” said Nicolas Höfler, who caused the penalty by an alleged foul, on Sky. The referee’s whistle was an “absolute joke”, criticized Höfler. He classified the double strike for the 2-0 lead of Leipzig as decisive: “If it stays at 1-0, everything is still possible.”
Even Union Berlin could not change anything about Bayern’s four-point lead. Six goals in Frankfurt – home win for Schalke
Eintracht Frankfurt, on the other hand, experienced the next great evening. Coach Oliver Glasner’s team defeated TSG Hoffenheim deservedly 4-2 (3-1) and climbed past Borussia Dortmund to a place in the Champions League. At times, the Hessians showed very good football, Djibril Sow (6th), Randal Kolo Muani (8th), Éric Junior Dina Ebimbe (29th) and Jesper Lindstrøm (56th) scored for the seventh win in the last eight competitive games. Hoffenheim, for their part, remained without a win in the fourth game in a row, the goals from Christoph Baumgartner (38th) and Ozan Kabak (46th) were not enough.
And Schalke? Can actually still win. Thanks to goal scorer Simon Terodde, S04 are finding new courage in the relegation battle, and coach Thomas Reis’ team deservedly won 1-0 (1-0) against 1. FSV Mainz 05. In front of 58,256 spectators in Gelsenkirchen, Terodde scored the decisive goal in the tenth minute for the fighting and this time also playfully strong hosts.
The second division record scorer ensured the first win after seven defeats in a row in the Bundesliga and the first success under coach Reis in the third game. Schalke remains last with nine points, but is only two points behind Hertha BSC in the relegation rank. It was the third defeat in a row for Mainz, who are placed in the middle of the table.
