Bundesliga: Dortmund messed up the lead in the table – sport

1. FC Cologne – Borussia Dortmund 3: 2 (0: 1), Goals: 0: 1 Brandt (31st), 1: 1 Kainz (53rd), 2: 1 Tigges (56th), 3: 1 Ljubicic (71st), 3: 2 Schmitz (78th, own goal)

This time, the fans of 1. FC Köln had exactly 27 opportunities to express their displeasure. The target of dislike was Anthony Modeste, formerly a celebrated FC striker, now a reviled BVB attacker, with each of his ball contacts. At the beginning of August, Modeste moved from Cologne to Dortmund, but he hasn’t really arrived there yet. Wouldn’t his return to the Rhine be the ideal time to change that?

But Modeste occupied the role of the supporting actor, he initially left the stage to Julian Brandt, who demonstrated his excellent technique when taking the ball and finishing 1-0. Dortmund jumped to first place in the so-called lightning table. However, the performance of Edin Terzic’s team was rather flighty, and Cologne also revealed gaps without creating any great chances. That only changed after the break – and how! Within two minutes, Cologne turned the game around with a beautifully combined goal from Florian Kainz and a header from Steffen Tigges after a corner.

And so it wasn’t the former Cologne player Modeste who determined the direction of this duel, but the former Dortmund player Tigges, who scored for Cologne to make it 2-1. Because FC felt inspired, hit the post – and even the goal, through Dejan Ljubicic. So Modeste’s working day was a complete failure, which didn’t change the 2:3 through an own goal by Benno Schmitz. BVB are now dealing with other topics than Modeste’s return: collective defense or competitive toughness, for example.

Eintracht Frankfurt – 1. FC Union Berlin 2: 0 (2: 0), Goals: 1-0 Götze (12′), 2-0 Lindstrom (42′)

So far, both teams have each contributed an offensive attraction in this still young season. The Frankfurters gave the Bundesliga a gift by signing Randal Kolo Muani from Nantes in the summer, who has been dashing down the flanks ever since. Sheraldo Becker is not a new face on the Berlin side, but hardly anyone would have believed the Dutchman capable of six goals, four assists and first place in the scorer list.

In a direct duel, Kolo Muani in particular showed his skills early on. After a lightning-fast counterattack on the right, the attacker served his teammate Mario Götze, who pushed in to take the lead. Jesper Lindström made it 2-0. The Dane coaxed the ball from Union’s Paul Jaeckel, pranced out of two defenders from Köpenick and put the ball past goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow into the goal like a dream. The table leaders from Berlin presented themselves as the inferior eleven throughout the game. Becker was substituted after a good hour without a significant goal chance.

Kolo Muani also went to the dressing room a little later – but unplanned: The Frenchman was sent off with yellow-red. During a solo run in the penalty area, the SGE striker stepped on Schäfer’s foot, an unintentional foul that rightly led to the dismissal. But the guests couldn’t use their twenty-minute advantage either. Frankfurt defended the lead without any major problems. Thanks to the defeat of BVB, Union Berlin remains at the top of the table despite the first bankruptcy of the season.

RB Leipzig – VfL Bochum 4: 0 (2: 0), Goals: 1-0 Werner (15′), 2-0 Nkunku (23′, penalty kick), 3-0 Werner (53′), 4-0 Nkunku (85′)

“I’ll try to enjoy it, but when it starts it’ll be difficult.” The new Bochum coach Thomas Letsch sent this amazingly honest sentence ahead of his Bundesliga debut and anyone who wanted to could see a little bit of tension in it. From Leipzig colleague Marco Rose there was at least a cuddle among buddies at the beginning (they know each other from Salzburg times), then an ominous afternoon relaxed for the coach of the bottom of the table.

On the one hand, this was due to Timo Werner’s almost untypically undercooled degrees to 1: 0 and 3: 0 – and on the other hand to a timid VfL. When Jannes Horn went to work more vigorously, he promptly brought down Christopher Nkunku. The Frenchman converted the justified penalty himself to the second Leipzig goal before he later missed another penalty. VfL played according to their placement, RB like a team with potential, Nkunku completed another counterattack to make it 4-0. In the end, Thomas Letsch also had to realize that the job in Bochum should not be for connoisseurs.

SC Freiburg – FSV Mainz 05 2: 1 (2: 0), Goals: 1-0 Gregoritsch (3rd), 2-0 Kyereh (37th), 2-1 Martin (52nd)

There are few teams that you would less like to fall behind than SC Freiburg. Christian Streich’s eleven leaves little room for counterattacks and is as well coordinated as a top orchestra. Against Mainz, SC played a perfect symphony in the third minute. Michael Gregoritsch powerfully completed a remarkable combination, the tone was set. After Daniel-Kofi Kyereh made it 2-0, everything seemed to be decided. Mainz caused a few discords at Freiburg with a goal from Aaron Martin and a wild final offensive – but SC saved the win and is now second in the table.

VfL Wolfsburg – VfB Stuttgart 3: 2 (2: 2), Goals: 0: 1 Guirassy (22nd), 1: 1 Marmoush (23rd), 2: 1 Arnold (38th), 2: 2 Mavropanos (45th + 1), 3: 2 Gerhardt (90th + 1)

One of several crisis duels this weekend – five points from seven games were enough for the two Autostadts to place 16th and 17th in the table before the matchday. The Wolfsburg team tried early on to change this result and created chances in the first quarter of an hour. The first goal was then surprisingly scored by VfB: the ball landed over the left at Hiroki Ito, who brought the game device sharply in front of the goal where last-minute newcomer Serhou Guirassy unerringly kept his foot in between.

Stuttgart’s celebration lasted a hand-timed 73 seconds before Omar Marmoush scored the equalizer flat and with the utmost precision. The Wolves even turned the game around – albeit with the kind help of VfB goalkeeper Florian Müller: He had previously saved several times, but Maximilian Arnold’s hard but unplaced long-range shot slipped over his fists into the goal. A VfL lead at half-time then prevented a naively defended corner. Stuttgart defender Konstantinos Mavropanos headed in to make it 2-2.

In an entertaining game, VfB missed several excellent counterattack opportunities after the break. When most had already prepared for a draw, Yannick Gerhardt got the Wolfsburg victory in added time after an attack on the right. VfL coach Niko Kovac can take a deep breath. His Stuttgart counterpart Pellegrino Matarazzo remains without a threesome.
