Bundesliga, 28th matchday: work win for Bayern in Freiburg

Status: 02.04.2022 6:20 p.m

In the top game at SC Freiburg, Bayern Munich needs a joker goal to crack the SCF. In the end, the people of Munich celebrate – but they still deliver curiosities in the final phase.

A goal by Serge Gnabry (73rd) 33 seconds after coming on as a substitute showed FC Bayern Munich the way to a 4-1 (0-0) away win at SC Freiburg on matchday 28 of the Bundesliga. The other goals came from Leon Goretzka (58′), Kinsgley Coman (82′) and Marcel Sabitzer (90’+6′). Freiburg’s Nils Petersen made it 1-1 (63′).

Before the quarter-final first leg of the Champions League at FC Villarreal, the Munich team clinched an important victory on the way to their tenth German championship title in a row and are unchallenged in first place with 66 points. With 45 points, Freiburg remains fifth in the race for a place in Europe.

Munich initially controls the game

At the beginning of the game, the guests from Munich set the tone. The midfield center with Joshua Kimmich and Goretzka in his first Bundesliga game after a four-month break controlled the game. Kingsley Coman and Leroy Sané provided pace on the flanks.

The visitors didn’t have any great chances at first, but after just under half an hour FC Bayern had a 4-0 shot on goal. Freiburg hardly came into their own offensively and had the first half chance (32nd) through a shot by Nicolas Höfler.

Goretzka lead and joker goals

It wasn’t until the second half that the game really picked up speed. When Munich took the lead after a free-kick with a header from Goretzka, Freiburg’s urgency to attack also woke up.

Petersen managed to equalize 1-1 with a pass from SC captain Christian Günther with a direct acceptance from 14 meters just 17 seconds after being substituted on. The hosts sensed morning air. Petersen had another good try (72′). But then Munich also had its “joker moment”. Gnabry came, was right in the center after a Hernandez cross and scored to make it 2-1.

Höler chance – goal Coman

The SCF reared up again. Lucas Höler didn’t get the ball decisively to a through pass from Vincenzo Grifo (81′). In return, FCB struck ice-coldly to make it 3-1 with a solid Coman shot.

A curiosity briefly caused confusion in the final phase when Coman overslept his substitution (86th) and Munich were twelve on the field for a few seconds. It was initially unclear whether the faux pas would still have consequences under sports law. At the end of the game he didn’t change anything. In injury time, Sabitzer even made it 4-1 after a counterattack.

Bayern travel first to FC Villarreal in Spain in the Champions League on Wednesday and will host FC Augsburg in the Bundesliga next Saturday (April 9th, 2022, 3:30 p.m.). Freiburg travels to Frankfurt for Eintracht the next day.
