Bundesliga, 28th matchday: Augsburg doesn’t give Wolfsburg a chance

Status: 03.04.2022 17:22

FC Augsburg has recorded an important victory in the relegation battle. With a spotless performance, Augsburg defeated VfL Wolfsburg surprisingly well 3-0 (1-0).

Iago (1st), Florian Niederlechner (63rd) and Mads Pedersen (69th) scored the goals for the Augsburg team. For Augsburg it was the first win after eight Bundesliga games without a win against VfL, who are still fighting relegation after their 15th defeat of the season. Augsburg improved to 14th place and is only two points behind the wolves.

Heilmann represents Kohfeldt who is ill

After his corona infection, Wolfsburg’s coach Florian Kohfeldt was not allowed to stand on the sidelines again in Augsburg. He was represented by the only 25-year-old assistant coach Vincent Heilmann.

According to the DFL, the Dutchman is the second youngest coach in Bundesliga history. Only the later DFB coach Bernd Stöber was a year younger when he stepped in as interim coach for the first and last time in 1976 as interim coach at the then Bundesliga club 1. FC Saarbrücken.

The game started with a bang. Pedersen skilfully passed the ball on to Iago, who ran in from the left, left Arnold standing and skillfully completed the early 1-0 with his right.

Wolfsburg with a weak performance

After that, not much happened for a long time. There were a surprising number of bad passes on both sides. Wolfsburg in particular had to sort themselves out after being behind early on, but should have equalized in the 23rd minute when Lukas Nmecha, initially in the penalty area, let two Augsburgers get out, but then failed free-standing to Augsburg keeper Rafal Gikiewicz – one of the very few Wolfsburg opportunities.

Even after the break, Augsburg had the better chances. First, Maximilian Arnold headed a ball from Niederlechner off the line, and a little later the Wolfsburg box rang for the second time. Reece Oxford headed a corner to Niederlechner, who maneuvered the ball into the net in a technically demanding manner (63′).

Pedersen’s powerful shot into the crease

A few minutes later, Pedersen made the preliminary decision. The Dane had snuck away on the left, received the ball appropriately and slammed it into the top left corner – a nice goal. A good 20 minutes before the final whistle the game was as good as decided.

Should the Lower Saxony afford further such weak performances as this afternoon in Augsburg, it should be very close again in the fight for relegation.

FCA now against Mainz on Wednesday

FCA will make up for the home game against Mainz 05 on Wednesday (06.04.2022, 6.30 p.m.) and can climb further up. Wolfsburg will play against Bielefeld on Saturday (3.30 p.m.) for the next duel against a direct competitor in the relegation battle.
