The formation of a new cabinet failed for the third time in Bulgaria after the government was overthrown. Thus, new elections will probably take place in the Balkan state in the autumn.
After the fall of the government in Bulgaria, the last attempt to form a new government failed. Bulgaria’s President Rumen Radew recently commissioned the Socialist Party to form a new cabinet. This had tried in vain to establish a parliamentary majority with the previous coalition partners. The formation of a government failed for the third time.
Prime Minister Petkov’s four-party government has been in office since December 2021. Petkov’s “We’re Continuing Change” party is considered pro-Western. The co-governing ITN party left the coalition in June. This led to a vote of no confidence on June 22, in which the government under Prime Minister Petkov was voted out of office by parliament.

According to the constitution, after three failed attempts, the president must set up an interim government before calling new elections. Prime Minister Petkow will now continue to run government business on an interim basis.
New elections are expected to take place in the autumn. That would be the fourth general election in less than two years.
