Bulgaria has recently made positive headlines against its will. In Sofia it was believed that accession to the Schengen area had been agreed, but then the Austrian government stepped in. The ÖVP has to survive several state elections, and when it comes to the popular election campaign topic of migration and asylum, the Bulgarians, along with the Romanians, have become a kind of collateral damage: one cannot tolerate the waiver of border controls, it was said from Vienna, because then the number of refugees would increase even more will.
