Brunnthal – roundabout or traffic light for Faistenhaar – district of Munich

A conversion of the dangerous intersection of the two busy state roads 2070 and 2367 in the Brunnthal district of Faistenhaar is approaching. In the summer, Transport Minister Kerstin Schreyer (CSU) got an impression of the precarious, even dangerous situation in which pedestrians, especially school children and cyclists, can get on an on-site visit. At the most recent municipal council meeting, Mayor Stefan Kern (CSU) reported that his administration had been presented with the traffic light system and roundabout variants as a solution on St. Nicholas Day. As soon as the costs have been determined, they are to be presented to the municipal council and thus to the public.

It still depends on the costs, which the responsible Freising State Building Authority has to determine. It’s no good if you create a great plan but the state doesn’t provide the money for it, says Mayor Kern. Although he is happy that the crossing should be safer. Almost 10,000 vehicles drive here every day on State Road 2070 (Ayinger and Faistenhaarer Strasse) in an east-west direction and State Road 2367 or District Road M9 (Ottobrunner and Miesbacher Strasse) in a north-south direction.

“I’m a fan of roundabouts,” Kern admits openly. They are more expensive to buy, but then they work automatically: “A spinning top has a certain momentum of its own, because it flows,” says Kern. However, a gyroscope needs more space, so some old trees may have to be felled. That will show the exact planning including the area balance. If there were a roundabout, the municipality would be able to design the areas that are not roadways. And Kern is convinced: “We will plant it”. This can be done with planting islands, as there are already 15 to 20 in the community.

But the sticking point will be the costs. And traffic lights are cheaper there. However, what works in terms of traffic can cause a lot of trouble, depending on how the phases are set. Kern recalls the troubles that the community in Brunnthal-Nord had before there was a traffic light that allowed traffic to flow out of the commercial area quickly. So now it’s time to wait.
