Broadcast, story, characters… What you need to know about this “Game of Thrones” prequel

Only a few more days before the release of house of the dragon, the highly anticipated prequel to Game Of Thrones which will land Monday on OCS. Will she live up to her big sister? Will it be better than the book – which is sometimes a little winded? While waiting to judge for yourself, here is what we can tell you about this event season.

What is that ?

It’s a prequel to the series Game Of Thrones. Just like the latter, House of the Dragon is adapted from the work of George RR Martin, and more particularly from his book Fire and Bloodpublished in 2018. In this novel, the writer tells the story of the Targaryen family, who ruled Westeros for nearly 300 years before being overthrown by Robert Baratheon.

The series is particularly interested in an episode, known as “Dance of the Dragons”: the succession of King Viserys I, which degenerated into civil war and resulted in the almost total disappearance of dragons on the island. of Westeros. These events take place approximately 200 years before the beginning of the plot of Game Of Thrones.

Ryan J. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik are the showrunners of the series, which has 10 episodes. George RR Martin is one of the executive producers.

Who are the characters ?

Viserys I (Paddy Considine) is the fifth king of the Targaryen dynasty. His estate pits his designated heiress, his eldest daughter Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) from a first marriage, against his son Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney), born from his second marriage to Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke). Why does the second challenge the ability of the first to succeed their father? The pretext is as old as the world: because it’s a woman, of course.

The family is further weakened by the fact that another woman, the king’s cousin, Rhaenys (Eve Best) had twice been denied the throne because of her gender. The latter then married the richest man in the kingdom, Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint). King Viserys’ brother and one of the kingdom’s greatest warriors, Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) will marry Rhaenyra (intra-family marriages are common among Targaryens) and support her against Aegon.

Add to this that the main protagonists of this war of succession are accomplished dragon riders. So there will be a lot of fire and blood in Westeros and in large quantities.

Where and when is it broadcast?

In France, the series will be available on OCS from August 22 at 3 a.m., simultaneously with the United States, where it is broadcast on HBO and HBOMax.
