The supporters of Gremio Porto Alegre were furious: After the home defeat, they stormed the lawn, destroyed the equipment of the video assistant and fought with the guest fans.

Supporters of the Brazilian first division soccer team Gremio Porto Alegre stormed onto the field after the home defeat against Palmeiras São Paulo (1: 3) and destroyed the equipment for the video assistant (VAR). As soon as the game was over, angry Gremio supporters, who according to the sports portal “Globoesporte” are said to have come from the Ultras sector, ran onto the field of the Arena do Gremio and took apart what was in their way. In addition to the VAR equipment, the equipment of photographers also suffered, as was shown on Brazilian television on Sunday evening (local time).

Fans beat each other up

Palmeiras player Raphael Veiga broke off an interview on the lawn, according to “Globoesporte”, and the guest delegation withdrew into the stadium tunnel. In the parking area there were therefore clashes between Grêmio supporters and the security forces. Meanwhile, fans of Gremio and Palmeiras fought in the stands.

The video assistant had made a decisive contribution to the outcome of the game. Among other things, after the intervention of the video assistant, a penalty was given for Palmeiras, which led to the 1-1. After the defeat, the traditional club Grêmio is second to last in the table with 26 points and must fear relegation to the second division.
