Brandenburg’s Education Minister Britta Ernst (SPD) resigns. This was announced by a spokeswoman for the state government on Monday without giving reasons. Ernst has been a member of two cabinets led by Prime Minister Woidke since 2017. Her successor will be the previous Secretary of State Steffen Freiberg.

In a statement from the state, Woidke thanked Britta Ernst for her work as a minister. “In difficult times – I’m just thinking of the corona pandemic – she carried out the office with foresight and a steady hand. I am sure that looking back, her tenure will be marked by important milestones such as the continuous improvement of the day-care center staff ratio and the entry into the non-contribution will be linked,” he said.

Regarding Ernst’s successor, Woidke explained that Steffen Freiberg had quickly established himself in the Brandenburg Ministry of Education – Freiberg had only started as State Secretary in September. Previously, he worked as State Secretary in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in the field of schools and political education. “One of the focal points of his work is education in the digital age, which is also why I am sure that he is the right person for the tasks ahead and I look forward to working with him,” said Dietmar Woidke to his new Minister of Education.
