Bouygues Telecom has introduced the Bbox WiFi 7, its advanced router featuring Wi-Fi 7 certification, set for release on January 27. Priced at €51.99 per month with a 12-month commitment, it offers enhanced performance through a unique antenna configuration and symmetrical 8 Gbit/s Fiber. The new design includes a touchscreen interface and eco-friendly features. Bouygues also plans to launch compatible tri-band repeaters to boost coverage, aiming to attract tech-savvy consumers amidst growing competition.

Bouygues Telecom Unveils the New Bbox WiFi 7

After nearly two months of anticipation surrounding the initial leaks, Bouygues Telecom has officially launched its latest high-end router, the Bbox WiFi 7. The unveiling took place during a press conference on January 16, showcasing a significant upgrade from the previous model that debuted in 2020, with an update in 2022 that introduced Wi-Fi 6E capabilities.

Set to hit the shelves on January 27, the Bbox WiFi 7 is touted as the first router to achieve Wi-Fi 7 certification from the Wi-Fi Alliance. This positions it ahead of the Freebox Ultra, which was released in early 2024 just before receiving its certification. The new Bbox is available through the “Bbox ultym” subscription, priced at €51.99 per month, an increase of €2 from the previous offering, and is subject to a 12-month commitment. Currently, it is not available under the B&You Pure Fibre offer. The older Bbox ultym option will continue to be available at a slightly lower price point.

Key Features of the Bbox WiFi 7

The highlight of this new generation is its Wi-Fi 7 capabilities, making Bouygues Telecom the second operator to provide this cutting-edge technology, following Free. Bouygues claims its unique antenna configuration, featuring four antennas per frequency band, enhances performance and speed significantly. The Bbox Wi-Fi 7 operates across three frequency bands: 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz. Additionally, Bouygues asserts a leading position in the nPerf ranking for fiber operators, showcasing their commitment to quality service.

Another notable advancement is the introduction of symmetrical 8 Gbit/s Fiber, an upgrade from the previous Bbox’s 8 Gbit/s downstream and 1 Gbit/s upstream configuration. This brings Bouygues in line with competitors like Orange and SFR, who already offer symmetrical 8 Gbit/s options.

The new Bbox also boasts an innovative design that sets it apart. Moving away from the vertical design reminiscent of a connected speaker, this model adopts a shape inspired by the Bouygues Telecom logo, featuring a distinctive front and back. The standout element is a compact touchscreen interface, akin to a smartwatch, which provides complete control over the router’s functionalities. The back of the device showcases multiple ventilation holes shaped like the Bouygues logo, promoting efficient cooling without the need for a fan. This eco-conscious design philosophy emphasizes sustainability and ease of repair.

Alongside the touchscreen, Bouygues Telecom provides a web portal for managing the Bbox, allowing users to monitor connected devices. Notably, the Bbox WiFi 7 eliminates mechanical buttons entirely, streamlining the user experience.

Additionally, Bouygues is launching Wi-Fi 7 tri-band repeaters that are compatible with the new Bbox, supporting all three frequencies of 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz. These repeaters can be easily paired with the Bbox to enhance coverage, though there is no accompanying new TV box being introduced.

At a monthly fee of €51.99 (promotional pricing of €44.99 for the first year is available for mobile subscribers), the new Bbox comes with a slightly higher price tag compared to its predecessor. Migration to the new model will commence on January 27. Bouygues Telecom aims to attract tech-savvy consumers with its Wi-Fi 7 offerings while preparing for competition as rivals Orange and SFR are expected to launch their high-end boxes in 2025.
