Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been the subject of new reports about possible new violations of anti-Covid rules, according to concurring sources on Tuesday.
The former head of the Conservative government, forced to resign last summer after a succession of scandals, mainly that of the Downing Street parties in violation of anti-Covid rules, has already been fined.
But as revealed on Tuesday the Timesexecutive services – the Cabinet Office – have made new reports to the police, as new elements have come to light in the preparation of the investigation into the management of the pandemic.
“Potential” breaches in Downing Street
London police said they were “assessing” information from the Cabinet Office on May 19, about “potential” breaches of anti-Covid rules at Downing Street between June 2020 and May 2021.
According to TimesThames Valley Police have also confirmed they have received a report of incidents at Chequers, the country residence of British Prime Ministers.
His parliamentary seat at stake?
A spokesperson for Boris Johnson denounced to the Times an “obvious attempt to fabricate something out of nothing for political reasons”, noting that the former Prime Minister’s lawyers have argued, both to the Cabinet Office and to the ongoing parliamentary inquiry, that the events disputed were legal.
Boris Johnson is indeed under the influence of a parliamentary inquiry which must determine whether he lied to Parliament by repeatedly claiming that all health restrictions had been respected in Downing Street during the pandemic.
Boris Johnson was heard for more than three hours on March 22 by the committee in this affair which could go so far as to cost him his seat as an MP, and affirmed “hand on heart” that he did not lie to the Parliament.
