For years, San Francisco has suffered from a crime wave. Now, with Bob Lee, she has claimed a prominent victim.

He played a leading role in several important tech companies and is considered a confidant of Twitter founder Jack Dorsey. Now Bob Lee passed away on Tuesday morning. The company Mobilecoin, which he manages, confirmed this to several media. The police are investigating a murder. Silicon Valley was shocked by the news.

Police were called to an incident on Main Street in the city’s financial district at 2:45 a.m. local time Tuesday morning. According to the police report, she found an unconscious 43-year-old man who had been stabbed. It has now been confirmed that it was Lee. According to the report, an ambulance took the seriously injured to a nearby hospital. Despite life-saving measures, he succumbed to his injuries there.

Dismay at Bob Lee’s death

Lee had a long career in Silicon Valley. At Google, he was involved in the early years of development of the Android operating system. The developer, often referred to as “Crazy Bob”, then set up the Square service together with Dorsey, which later became part of the payment service provider Block. He has been product manager at Mobilecoin since the end of 2021. “Bob was a dynamo, a force of nature,” Mobilecoin cher Josh Goldbard wrote in a statement. “He was made for a world that was just being formed. A child of dreams. And no matter how crazy it was what he dreamed up – he made it happen.”

Many are shocked on social media. “It’s true, I’m already being called about it. It breaks my heart,” confirmed Twitter founder Jack Dorsey on the “Nostr” app as one of the first to hear his colleague’s death. “Square and Cash App would not have been possible without Bob. A great guy.” The two had worked closely together on the projects and had set up Cash App together.

“I just found out that my good friend was killed last night,” shared MMA fighter Jake Shield. “He was in a good part of town and seems to have accidentally gotten into a robbery. F*** San Francisco.” Lee was a loyal friend. Elon Musk also wrote in response to Shield’s tweet, “Very sorry to hear that.”

Rising crime in San Francisco

Like several other commentators, Musk is using the death as an opportunity to criticize the increasingly escalating crime scene in San Francisco. In the Californian city, with the wealth of Silicon Valley, the gap between rich and poor has widened in recent years, and homelessness has increased dramatically. And crime has also risen sharply. According to reports in the local newspaper “San Francisco Chronicle”, even road workers have to reckon with having their tools stolen with the use of weapons.

“As a lifelong resident of the Bay Area, I currently have more questions than answers,” Goldbard tweeted about the crime wave. “I don’t have a solution either. But something is wrong with this great city.”
