Around two dozen members of the environmental organization Greenpeace demonstrated on Friday morning in front of the German Amazon headquarters in Freimann against the “Black Friday consumer battles”. They accuse the global online mail order company of “destroying nature as a business model”. More than half a dozen activists abseiled down the glass facade of the building and attached banners there. With one, they changed the name Amazon Prime to “Amazon Crime” – the English word for crime.
In addition, three men and a woman in green jackets marked the location on a meadow in front of the building with a so-called “Google Pin”, a kind of digital pin. Next to it they placed a banner with the inscription “Species extinction begins here” and the five-star scale that is customary in online ratings; in this case they assigned 0.0. Greenpeace accuses the company of promoting excessive consumption with the discount campaign imported from the USA on the last Friday in November, producing packaging waste and generally destroying resources with online trading and fueling the climate crisis.
The notified police were initially deployed with more than ten patrol car crews, but saw no reason to intervene. There were no traffic delays from the action, and after the Amazon boss apparently decided to ignore the Greenpeace people’s visit and the officials also determined that “everything was safe,” according to a spokesman, they let the activists on buildings hanging.
