According to a report by “Bild”, Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht has decided to resign. This has not yet been officially confirmed. A spokesman for the Ministry of Defense told the AFP news agency: “These are rumors that we do not comment on.”
“Bild” relies on several people familiar with the processes. The exact time of the resignation is therefore still unclear. The decision to resign should have come from the minister herself. Accordingly, she was of the opinion that the Ministry of Defense needed a fresh start in terms of personnel. The former military commissioner Eva Högl is being considered as a possible successor within the SPD, reported “Bild”.
Lambrecht has been criticized for months, most recently because of a failed New Year’s Eve video. Critics repeatedly questioned her suitability for the post and called for her resignation.
