In Berlin, the fire brigade went out on Wednesday evening for a large-scale operation in the Neukölln district. There, for reasons that are still unclear, a fire broke out in an approximately 5,000 square meter warehouse on the premises of the recycling company Remondis. There was initially no information about possible injuries.

Dark smoke seen over Berlin

More than 120 firefighters were deployed to extinguish the flames. Even hours after the fire broke out, dark smoke was still rising from the building on Lahnstrasse. The plume of smoke could be seen for miles in many parts of the capital, moving south. “We can’t say much at the moment, but one thing is clear: this fire will keep us busy until tomorrow morning,” said a spokesman for the fire department of the “Berliner Zeitung”. According to consistent media reports, paper was stored in the hall.

The authorities warned the population about the dangers of smoke and fire via smartphones. People were asked to avoid the area of ​​​​operation and to keep windows and doors closed.

It was not yet clear whether the smoke contained toxic substances. There was also no information about the cause of the major fire.
