Bibo promotes Corona child vaccination – culture

Big Bird, the big yellow bird from Sesame Street, recommends that children be vaccinated against Covid-19. And the Republicans? Running storm.

Roughly speaking, life takes place between these two Sesame Street characters: On the one hand, Oscar, who lives in a garbage can, always grumbling, misanthropic and know-it-all. On the other hand: Big Bird (or Bibo, as he is called in Germany). Childlike, interested, poetic, gentle, open-minded and friendly. Both figures were once designed by the brilliant Jim Henson and both were moved by the same puppeteer for a long time: Caroll Spinney. Both Spinney and his character Big Bird each have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Oscar doesn’t.

Now there is a little excitement among the US Republicans, as the big yellow bird announced on Twitter that he had been vaccinated against Covid-19. A clear recommendation from the Sesame Street makers for the five to eleven year olds in the country who are currently called for vaccination. Supported by US President Joe Biden, who already praised Big Bird for its work on Twitter. It was not long before the Republican Senator Ted Cruz from Texas spoke of “government propaganda” on Twitter and the conservative media representative Lisa Boothe from Fox News castigated the action as “brainwashing”. Steve Cortes, a former advisor to Donald Trump, also called the action “evil”. Republicans like Mitt Romney have been targeting the non-commercial TV network PBS for years, where the children’s program of the politically independent Sesame Workshop is broadcast.

In any case, Big Bird has been campaigning for vaccination time and again since the 1970s and, in contrast to some current decision-makers, the bird would arguably even speak out in favor of compulsory vaccination – despite all the Oscars. It is a pity that neither Jim Henson, who died in May 1990 at the age of 53 as a result of a delayed pneumonia, nor Caroll Spinney, who died in 2019 at the age of almost 86, can now give their opinion. So you have to look again in Spinney’s book “The Wisdom of Big Bird”, what distinguishes his big yellow bird from these bad-tempered green garbage can monsters. The answer is, “Big Bird has compassion for others.”
