Tears to Herrmann-Wick’s farewell? “Could happen”

Denise Herrmann-Wick still has three races to go. However, the biathlete still has a lot planned on the home stretch of her career in Oslo. After that she wants to be spontaneous.
Olympic champion Denise Herrmann-Wick is preparing for an emotional end to her successful biathlon career.
“That could well happen,” said the 34-year-old in an ARD interview when asked if she might shed a few tears after her last race on Sunday in Oslo. “I have no idea what’s coming, I’ll let myself be surprised,” added the sprint world champion.
Three more races are still on the program for the Saxon before she ends her career at Holmenkollen after the final mass start. “It’s a crazy feeling. You can only imagine it the way it is,” said Herrmann-Wick about the last moments of her career: “I don’t even want to imagine Sunday like that, because it’ll be until then just a little more.”

The former cross-country skier still has the chance today (3:20 p.m. / ARD and Eurosport) to secure the small crystal globe for the World Cup ranking in the sprint. Before the last race of the season over 7.5 kilometers, Herrmann-Wick leads in this classification just ahead of the Italian Dorothea Wierer.
After decades of sporting competition, the two-time world champion is already looking forward to new experiences. “It’s also a goal for me now to be spontaneous at times, to be flexible at times. That’s not my greatest strength. But after so many years of being structured and planned, it’s now on the agenda,” she said.
The decision to resign right now was not made spontaneously. “It has matured in the last two or three years. Especially with the big goal of the Olympics last year and the home World Championships in Oberhof, this is the perfect moment for me,” she added.
