A Berlin city councilor from the Greens gives tips on Twitter against illegal parking. A small farce emerges – with a serious core.

Almut Neumann is the city councilor for the Greens in Berlin, responsible for the Mitte district. On Twitter on Thursday, she gave tips on what people could do if they saw illegal parkers. Wrong parking is not a trivial offense, she writes there: “It endangers the lives of people on foot and on bikes. It is therefore right to take consistent action against this.

Under the thread, several are amused about the alleged “call to informers”. The deputy chairman for the FDP in the Bundestag, Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, takes it to extremes. He shares Neumann’s tweet and comments, among other things: ‘But neither’#Misparking‘ still ‘#Cavalier‘ correctly gendered – eieiei, that causes trouble with the base. After all, it’s not a trivial offense, that!”

Other Greens are fighting back, not only from Berlin

In turn, some Greens do not let that sit on their own. Franziska Brantner, Parliamentary State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Economics, criticized the fact that Lambsdorff had probably not been out and about with prams or people in wheelchairs for a long time. Because if a wrongly parked car is on the sidewalk or cycle path, it cuts off the path for everyone.

With Ulf Buermeyer, a lawyer is also involved in the Twitter debate. However, not directly on the subject of illegal parking, but on the accusation of informers: “The enforcement of democratically legitimized norms in a constitutional state has (…) with ‘#block warden‘ and ‘#Denunciation‘ unrelated to.”

Neumann’s original tweet is not entirely without reason. In 2022, 7,450 cyclists had an accident on Berlin’s roads, and ten were killed. That is 767 more accidents than in 2021, but the number has been at around this level for years. Also this year, four people died who had been traveling with the Rand in Berlin traffic.
