The man who killed the son of the ex-Federal President and the Berlin doctor Fritz von Weizäcker died in the correctional facility hospital. A death investigation is underway.

The murderer of the Berlin doctor Fritz von Weizsäcker has died. A spokesman for the Berlin public prosecutor’s office said he was found dead on April 18 in his room in the correctional hospital.

The “Bild” newspaper had previously reported on it. “We are conducting a death investigation. There is no evidence of third-party debt.”

Twelve years imprisonment

The man from Andernach (Rhineland-Palatinate) was sentenced to twelve years in prison in the summer of 2020 for the murder of the doctor and the attempted murder of a police officer. The court also ordered her to be placed in a psychiatric hospital.

The public prosecutor saw hatred of the family of the deceased as a motive, in particular his father, the former Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker (1920-2015).

Fritz von Weizsäcker was stabbed to death on November 19, 2019 in the Berlin Schlossparkklinik towards the end of a lecture. According to the verdict, the perpetrator had insidiously rammed a knife into his neck for base motives. The professor died. The policeman who overpowered the attacker was seriously injured.

A report had confirmed the man had a mental disorder. His ability to control was significantly reduced. As a result, he was not sentenced to life imprisonment, as is usual for murder.
