A private investor has submitted a purchase offer for Rostock-Laage Airport. The Berlin-based company Zeitfracht hopes to take over the previously communally operated airport by the end of the year.

Rostock-Laage Airport is apparently on the verge of privatization. The Zeitfracht group of companies, based in Berlin, wants to buy the largest commercial airport in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. In the summer of this year there were talks with potential new owners, said the airport manager Dörthe Hausmann the NDR. The Zeitfracht Group has now submitted an offer to buy. The offer enables Rostock-Laage Airport a new strategic direction, said Hausmann.

Company active in forwarding, transport and logistics

Zeitfracht is active in the areas of forwarding, transport and logistics – and there in particular in road and air freight. The almost 170 jobs at the airport in Laage should be retained, said Zeitfracht boss Wolfram Simon-Schröter of the editorial network Germany (RND). His company is also planning a logistics center with around 250 new jobs. Rostock would primarily become a cargo airport, but it should keep the passenger business. According to the RND, Simon-Schröter is hoping for a deal before the end of the year.

We have been talking about privatization for 13 years

The privatization of the deficit Rostock-Laage airport has been under discussion since 2008. Every year millions are missing from the airport’s cash register. Several low-cost airlines that used Laage have gone bankrupt in recent years. The facility, originally set up as a location for the German Armed Forces, has also been used as a civil regional airport by Rostock-Laage GmbH since 1993. The previous shareholders are the Hanseatic city of Rostock, the district of Rostock and the city of Laage.
