Berchtesgadener Land: mountaineer survives 120-meter fall – Bavaria

A climber survived a fall of 120 meters through a rocky snow gully near Ramsau in Berchtesgadener Land. The 38-year-old from Central Franconia slipped on the ascent on Easter Sunday and fell about 120 meters over 80 meters in altitude, the district association of the Bavarian Red Cross announced on Tuesday. He was lucky because he got stuck on a large block at an altitude of 2130 meters. He was moderately injured.

The man made an emergency call himself. He was rescued by helicopter from the steep, icy terrain covered with a thin layer of snow. On the days around Easter, three hikers slipped on old snow and fell to their deaths. Even before Easter, the police and mountain rescue service had warned of wintry conditions and dangerous old snow at higher northern altitudes and urged people to have good equipment.

A couple was walking in sneakers in the alpine Zugspitze region and slipped. In the Karwendel, a 27-year-old hiker also lost his footing on snow-covered ground. This year alone there have already been 19 fatal accidents in the area of the police headquarters in Upper Bavaria South from Berchtesgaden to the Zugspitze.

The mountain rescue service also had to move out to other operations. On Easter Monday, a 64-year-old hang-glider crashed near Grassau in the Traunstein district. Shortly after the start at the mountain station of the Hochplattenbahn, he touched the treetops and then got stuck in a treetop about 35 meters above the ground, said the Grassau mountain rescue service on Facebook. The man escaped with a broken forearm, bruises and abrasions.
