Berchtesgaden: Sick man collapses while hiking and dies – Bavaria

A 65-year-old man collapsed while hiking on the Hochstaufen in Berchtesgadener Land and died shortly afterwards. According to the Bavarian Red Cross (BRK), the man from Lower Bavaria almost certainly did not fall, but collapsed due to an acute illness.

A hiker had seen an unconscious man with binoculars on Saturday afternoon and called the emergency services. A woman also alerted the mountain rescue service. According to the BRK, mountaineers who arrived began to resuscitate the man. Further resuscitation efforts by an emergency doctor were also unsuccessful: the man died at the scene of the accident. According to the BRK, eight mountain rescuers were on duty for around two and a half hours.

Shortly before, the mountain rescue service received an emergency call about a climber who had reportedly fallen several meters down a broken rock on the Sternschnuppe climbing route on the Feuerhörndl on the northwest side of the Reiteralpe. The rock also hit the 60-year-old from Salzburger Land on the foot and lower leg. According to the BRK, the man was stuck with serious injuries. A rescue helicopter first brought a mountain rescuer and then an emergency doctor to the injured man. He was taken to a hospital for treatment. According to the BRK, six mountain rescue workers were on duty for around two hours.
