Inter Miami, the club of David Beckham, violated the rules of the North American Football League (MLS) with the salary conditions offered to French midfielder Blaise Matuidi, MLS said in a statement on Friday.

The salary of the 34-year-old world champion, recruited last summer by the Florida franchise, went “beyond” the emoluments of a player subject to the salary framework, “and he should have been classified as” designated player “” Says the MLS at the end of its investigation opened in early March. “Therefore, Inter Miami CF violated the limit of designated players since the team had three designated players besides Matuidi in 2020,” adds the League.

Not integrated at the start among the three “designated” players

When Matuidi, who arrived from Juventus Turin free of any contract, signed up with Miami in August 2020, he was not one of the three so-called “designated” players, that is to say the only ones who could. have a salary in excess of the framework set by the MLS. These three “designated players” were the Mexican Rodolfo Pizarro and the Argentines Matias Pellegrini and Gonzalo Higuain.

Matuidi was therefore supposed to be one of the players whose salary conditions are under TAM (Targeted Allocation Money) status, ie at supervised salary. According to MLS regulations for the 2020 season, he could be paid a minimum of $ 612,500 (or € 542,000) and a maximum of $ 1,612,500 (or € 1,427,000). Which does not really correspond to his status as a star of the team (with Higuain) and even less as reigning world champion with the Blues, crowned in 2018 in Russia.

Miami now in the nails

This rule of the “designated player” is nicknamed the “Beckham Rule” since its creation in 2007, to allow the Los Angeles Galaxy to enlist the former English superstar of Real Madrid with emoluments far exceeding the standards of the North American championship.

In order to respect this rule, the Miami club had to part ways with one of its three “designated players”, midfielder Matias Pellegrini, who signed for Fort Lauderdale. Matuidi is now officially one of the three “designated players”, still with Higuain and Pizarro.
