Five members of the far-right Proud Boys group have been charged with their role in the storming of the Capitol. You will get “seditious conspiracy accused of subversive conspiracy. This is notable because the Justice Department is treating the January 6, 2021 uprising by the hyped-up Trump supporters as an attempt to overthrow the United States government.

Former Proud Boys leader Henry “Enrique” Tarrio is now in the dock alongside four others. Tarrio was arrested in early March. On January 6, however, he was not in Washington in person: he was banned from the city after stealing a Black Lives Matter flag from a church and burning it.

Coordinated attack on Capitol?

His “Proud Boys” are accused of planning a coordinated attack on the Capitol in advance, along with another far-right group, the “Oath Keepers” and other co-conspirators. A member of the “Proud Boys” pleaded guilty in April and has been involved in official investigations into the extremists ever since.

The “Proud Boys” became known to a larger public when former US President Donald Trump called out to them in a television debate against his Democratic challenger Joe Biden: “Proud Boys – hold back and get ready!”
