Because of heavy rain: July goes down in weather history

In Germany it rained significantly more than usual in July. According to the German Meteorological Service, the month brought a total of 40 percent more precipitation than usual. The heavy rainfalls were of “historic proportions”.

Due to the extremely heavy rainfalls caused by low “Bernd”, July in Germany was almost half as wet as usual this year. As the German Weather Service (DWD) announced in Offenbach, citing an initial evaluation, the nationwide average fell around 110 liters of precipitation per square kilometer.

That was around 40 percent more than would have been expected based on the July values for the reference period from 1961 to 1990 used for meteorological comparisons.

Deep “Bernd” was to blame

Deep “Bernd” had established himself over Central Europe in the second half of the month and repeatedly brought heavy rain. The special thing about it was that the heavy rain no longer pelted down locally, but over a large area.

According to the DWD, the rain had “historic proportions”. It was so violent between the Cologne Bight and the Eifel that it “went down in the meteorological history books as the ‘rain of the century'”, the DWD said. According to the DWD, the devastating floods were “one of the most momentous natural disasters for Germany since the storm surge in 1962”.

Highest daily precipitation in Cologne

During the storm on July 13th and 14th, over 100 liters per square meter came from the sky within 24 hours. Wipperfürth-Gardeweg near Cologne reported the highest daily precipitation of a DWD station with 162.4 liters per square meter.

On July 17th, “Bernd” then opened his locks in Chiemgau and Berchtesgadener Land. There, too, there were 24-hour quantities of sometimes over 100 liters per square meter. With over 350 liters per square meter, this region also had the largest total monthly rainfall.

Elsewhere the situation was completely different. The measuring stations in the Magdeburg Börde recorded less than 20 liters.
