According to information from variety, the biopic of Elvis, directed by Baz Luhrmann, with Austin Butler in the title role, will be presented in preview at the next Cannes Film Festival. The film could even open this 75th edition on May 17, if the film is released the same day in French cinemas. It is currently still dated Wednesday, June 22. Baz Luhrmann has already opened the Cannes Film Festival twice, in 2001 with red Mill and in 2013 with Gatsby the magnificent.
variety also bets on the presence of Top Gun: Maverick with Tom Cruise out of competition, “the planetary blockbuster dreamed of by the general delegate of the Thierry Frémaux festival since 2020”. Also expected on the Croisette: Three Thousand Years of Longing by George Miller, Crimes of the Future by David Cronenberg broker by Hirokazu Kore-eda, or Decision to Leave by Park Chan-wook. The selection for Cannes 2022 is due to be unveiled the second or third week of April.
