Bayern Munich’s Lucas Hernandez appears in court in Madrid a day earlier

Lucas Hernandez was supposed to go to court in Madrid on Tuesday, but he comes by the day before. This postpones a deadline.

The French world champion Lucas Hernandez from Bayern Munich has faced a court in Madrid a day earlier than planned because of his threatened prison sentence of six months. As the Supreme Court of Madrid (TSJ) said in a statement, the 25-year-old appeared on Monday “at 11:30 am voluntarily, the day before he was summoned”. Should his appeal be denied, he would have to begin his sentence in a prison of his choice no later than October 28th.

Hernandez was originally supposed to appear in court in the Spanish capital on Tuesday to receive his order for the prison sentence imposed in December 2019. Due to the expected media interest and the preparation for the Champions League game at Benfica Lisbon on Wednesday (9 p.m.), the Bayern professional appeared a day earlier.

Hernandez had been convicted of violating a ban on approach and contact with his current wife. Now he has “ten days to go to prison voluntarily,” added the TSJ.

Will the appeal be decided in good time?

Hernandez could avoid jail if his appeal is accepted in a timely manner. It remains to be seen whether the Madrid court will react within the deadline and decide in its favor, a TSJ source told the news agency AFP.

In February 2017, both the then professional from Atletico Madrid and his girlfriend were sentenced to 31 days of community service after an argument over domestic violence, and a contact ban was imposed.

Hernandez and his girlfriend had reconciled after the argument and married a few months later. On his return from his honeymoon, the Frenchman was arrested for violating the non-contact ban, which continues to apply.
