“I don’t think Julian Nagelsmann is shaking, nor that Thomas Tuchel, for example, is being dealt with. That would also be the next admission of guilt after being so convinced of this coach,” said the 61-year-old on Monday in his Sky column . After his separation from Chelsea, Tuchel is without a club.
“Nagelsmann was not given a five-year contract for nothing and paid a lot of money for him. This is the longest contract term that a coach has ever received in Munich and that is why everyone will try to get out of this situation together,” said Matthäus. Nagelsmann came for a record fee from RB Leipzig. His contract in Munich runs until June 30, 2026.
“Yes, it is definitely the most difficult phase in this great coach’s young career, but I still believe that he will turn things around and draw the right conclusions,” said Matthäus about the 35-year-old. “Julian Nagelsmann is still the right coach for Bayern Munich.”
Players and Kahn are behind coach Nagelsmann
It is “nice that Oliver Kahn has his back right after the bankruptcy at FC Augsburg and the catastrophic series of four games that were not won in a row. That was exactly the right thing and also what Julian now needs from the club,” said Matthäus out.
“I don’t think he lost the locker room, that the team is playing against him or that they want to get rid of him. I rather think that chances and performance are currently being dealt with a little negligently. It may have started with that the players were allowed to fly to Ibiza after last season’s bankruptcy in Mainz,” said Matthäus. “And the parallel to this now is that you were a little distracted by the outstanding start to the season.”
The former Bayern star is critical of the performance of the professionals. If you try to “win gently”, then it’s not enough for any opponent, said Matthäus.
