Bavaria: The Black Moor threatens to dry up. – Bavaria

By the end of 2024, a new report is to record the water levels in detail, and another report is planned for vegetation. So far, the environment and forest ministries have apparently not been able to agree on concrete steps.

In the Black Moor in the Rhön, which is threatened with drying out, a new report is to record the water levels in detail. The report has been awarded to a planning office from Saxony and should be available by the end of 2024, as a spokesman for the Bavarian State Office for the Environment announced on request.

According to the tender, the appraisers should, among other things, shed more light on where water flows and could flow into the moor. Another report is planned for vegetation. According to the state office, further measures to save the moor have not yet been decided.

The 85-hectare moor in Lower Franconia near Fladungen (Rhön-Grabfeld district) is a so-called Kermimoor, which is unique in Germany and is constantly drying out. In January 2022, experts had prescribed a “radical cure” for the moor in a report commissioned by the government of Lower Franconia. In addition to medium and long-term steps, they recommended a number of measures that can be implemented immediately.

The environment and forest ministries have been negotiating the procedure for months. The Black Moor in the Bavarian Rhön is a popular destination with a circular route and viewing platform. Moors are also important for the climate because they store more carbon than forests.
