Bavaria: FW politicians were perhaps wrongly in custody – Bavaria

The public prosecutor’s office in Nuremberg-Fürth accuses Matthias Penkala of having cheated the Free State of a million euros in the trade in corona protective masks. The regional court responsible is much more cautious and recommends that the investigating authority withdraw the charges for the time being.

What happened to him in mid-July 2021 must have seemed like a nightmare to the city and district councilor Matthias Penkala from the Free Voters (FW), which could hardly be worse. Bavaria’s judiciary took the young, up-and-coming local politician from the Upper Palatinate into custody. Penkala, it is suspected, together with a business partner, defrauded the state of Bavaria of millions in the trade in corona protective masks. Penkala’s varied life in politics and as an entrepreneur was over in one fell swoop. No more appointments with Hubert Aiwanger, Head of the Free Voters, Economics Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. No more dealings with China. Instead: prison.
