Bavaria: AfD wants Bergmüller to be elected in the control committee – Bavaria

After its failed constitutional lawsuit, the AfD is planning a renewed attempt in the state parliament for its membership in the control committee (PKG) of the Bavarian constitutional protection. For the plenary session next Wednesday, she wanted to put her MP Franz Bergmüller up for election, the state parliament announced on Monday in an email to the leaders of the state parliamentary groups.

The AfD has been trying to get a place in the PKG since it moved into the Bavarian state parliament. The PKG controls, among other things, the work of the Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution, which is why the members are subject to special secrecy. According to the law, the body has seven members, divided according to the size of the parliamentary groups. The occupation is usually a formality.

It was only at the end of August that the Bavarian Constitutional Court rejected a corresponding AfD application. The AfD sees its constitutional rights as an opposition faction massively violated, since no member of the supervisory body has yet been elected on its part. All other parliamentary groups have refused to vote for AfD candidates in the previous four ballots.

The AfD does not provide a vice-president of the state parliament either, although the parliamentary group has repeatedly nominated candidates, but whoever it was – he failed. The members of the other parliamentary groups refused to elect an AfD-man as deputy of the state parliament president Ilse Aigner. The AfD complained, but to no avail.

Members of the AfD have repeatedly come into the focus of the protection of the constitution in Germany and also in Bavaria because of their proximity or contacts in the right-wing extremist scene. The Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution has also been monitoring the AfD’s youth organization, the “Young Alternative for Germany” (JA) and any follow-up activities of the now officially disbanded right-wing national wing. For its part, the AfD sees the protection of the constitution as an authority which is supposed to silence voices critical of the government.
