Bavaria: A good 80 percent of those in need of care are cared for at home – Bavaria

According to the Ministry of Health, more than 80 percent of the approximately 580,000 people in need of care living in Bavaria are cared for at home. In most cases, their own relatives took care of those affected. On the occasion of the “European Day of Caring Relatives” on October 6th, Minister Judith Gerlach (CSU) praised their commitment. “These people are doing great things. A lot of strength is required of you when you are there for a loved one around the clock – and often for many years. That deserves the highest recognition!”

At the same time, Gerlach pointed out that Bavaria wanted to help the caring relatives so that they were not overburdened. It is therefore planned to further expand the advice and support offerings. The same applies to day care facilities and short-term care places. “These short-term relief are extremely important for caring relatives. “In addition, Bavaria supports those in need of care and their relatives with the state care allowance of 1,000 euros annually,” said the minister.

Bavaria is also demanding wage replacement benefits for caring relatives, Gerlach reminded. In this way, they could be able to take a break from work for care-related reasons. Although the care allowance is included in the coalition agreement at the federal level, it has still not been decided.
