Mother and son bring an old painting to “Bares for Rares”. It was once in the rubble – and now arouses the interest of several dealers at the same time.

When Robert Turkovic bought an old apartment in Hamburg a year ago, he found an old painting in the rubble – which he gave to his mother Darinka for Christmas. She decided to auction the picture at “Bares for Rares” in order to make her grandchildren happy with the proceeds. A noble motif that immediately impressed presenter Horst Lichter. Mother and son hope to earn 500 euros. But is the old ham worth it at all?

In any case, the expert Colmar Schulte-Goltz can only find words of praise: “A wonderful example of still life painting,” he says of the bouquet of flowers painted on a wooden panel by the Dutch painter Cornelis Johannes van Hulsteijn (1811-1887).

The picture shows flowers in different stages of their life and is a sign of transience, the vanitas, the art historian knows how to report. Since the authenticity of the work has been confirmed on the reverse by a renowned art dealer from The Hague, Schulte-Goltz comes up with a completely different amount than the sellers asked for: he estimated the painting at 2200 to 2400 euros. Darinka Turkovic is almost speechless in view of this sum: “Whaaas? My grandson will also get a driver’s license,” says the woman who lives in Kassel.

Another bidder duel at “Bares for Rares”

The picture is also popular in the dealership: “Bring us a wonderful bouquet of flowers here,” praised Wolfgang Pauritsch. “Well, I really fell in love,” adds Julian Schmitz-Avila.

A bidding duel develops between Pauritsch and Schmitz-Avila, who together drive the price to 1,600 euros. Not a bad sum for a picture that was in the rubble! The two sellers are correspondingly happy.

And Julian Schmitz-Avila is also satisfied with his business: “If you polish the frame, clean the picture a little, it’s really a collector’s item,” enthuses the dealer.
