Bank runs: Why people take their money out of their accounts – Economy

If panic breaks out, the money is taken from the bank in no time at all, by cell phone. And fear is spreading faster and faster through social media. So is the risk of a bank run greater than it used to be?

It hasn’t been this bad since 2008. A banking crisis has been raging in the USA since the beginning of March, probably the worst since the Lehman crash. Four American regional banks have more or less collapsed in the meantime, and Credit Suisse has also been hit in Europe. At all institutes, too many customers had demanded their deposits back too quickly. It is unclear whether the situation will calm down soon.
