Bank Fees on the Rise for 2025

In 2025, French citizens will see an average increase in bank fees, amounting to 228.90 euros, which marks a 1.7% rise compared to last year. This information comes from the latest annual report by Panorabanques, released this Tuesday. However, it’s important to note that this increase is still below last year’s inflation rate, which was estimated at 2.4% by the Bank of France, as well as lower than the average annual inflation for 2024, reported at 2% by Insee.

Details on Fee Increases and Trends

Among the various fees, account maintenance fees have seen a significant jump of 6.8%, pushing the annual cost to 22.10 euros, up from 20.70 euros in 2024. Panorabanques highlights that no banks have reduced these maintenance fees in 2025, with three banks—Crédit Agricole Anjou Maine, Crédit Agricole de la Touraine et du Poitou, and Crédit Agricole Centre Loire—introducing these charges for the first time. In contrast, online banks such as BforBank, BoursoBank, and Fortuneo continue to offer this service for free, alongside LCL, Crédit coopératif, and Crédit Agricole Normandie Seine.

The average expense for a bank card, which constitutes nearly 30% of total bank fees, is set to rise by 3.2% in 2025, leading to an average cost of 67.10 euros, compared to 64.60 euros in 2024. Interestingly, deferred debit cards are slightly cheaper than immediate debit cards at 46.40 euros versus 46.50 euros. Anna Meylacq, a spokesperson for Panorabanques, explains that banks earn more from deferred debit cards due to higher interchange fees paid by merchants.

Moreover, charges for out-of-network withdrawals continue to increase, with the average annual cost for four withdrawals per month rising by 7.8% in 2025, following a 10.6% increase in 2024. This rise is attributed to a reduction in the number of free out-of-network withdrawals offered by ten banks. Additionally, the cost for agency transfers has also increased by 5.6%, with the average fee per transfer climbing from 4.80 euros in 2024 to 5.70 euros in 2025.

Moderate increases are also observed in other areas, such as withdrawals and payments outside the eurozone (+1.2%), the cost of sending a checkbook by registered mail (+1.4%), and information letters regarding unauthorized overdrafts (+2%). However, some fees remain steady, including those for online account management and intervention fees for unauthorized overdrafts, which have only seen a minimal increase of 0.05%.
