Ballon d’Or: This is Robert Lewandowski’s competition

A small delegation from FC Bayern Munich is traveling to Paris in good spirits this Monday. Striker star Robert Lewandowski is hoping for the prestigious award of the Ballon d’Or, the golden ball of the French specialist newspaper “France Football” for the outstanding footballers, after another bear-strong month. “I don’t think there is a player in the world who deserves to win the thing more,” said coach Julian Nagelsmann before the evening freestyle (from 8.30 p.m.) at the Théâtre du Châtelet.

After the triple year 2020 in the Bundesliga, 33-year-old Lewandowski improved Gerd Müller’s goal record, which is considered to be eternal, to 41 goals. In the current season, the Pole has already scored 25 goals in 20 competitive games for FC Bayern. Together with Sébastien Haller from Ajax Amsterdam, he tops the Champions League scorers list.

But is that enough? Record holder Lionel Messi (six awards so far) is considered the biggest competitor for the Bayern attacker. In addition to the current Champions League winner and European champion Jorginho, Mohamed Salah, Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and Erling Haaland are among the expanded favorites among the 30 nominees.
