In the ARD-Wahlarena Green top candidate Baerbock has asked the citizens. From the energy turnaround to care, the main topics addressed were people’s realities of life.
The speed limit, the workload of the nursing staff or the poor public transport in rural areas – the audience had 75 minutes in the ARD-Wahlarena in Lübeck and by video connected Bürger Zeit, the top candidate of the Greens, Annalena Baerbock, to ask questions. She defended the speed limit of 130 km / h, with a citizen’s insurance and a higher minimum wage she wants to support the nursing staff and promote public transport with the green climate package.

To a viewer who is worried about energy security, she promises that despite the nuclear phase-out and the early phase-out for coal in Germany, there will be no bottlenecks. When it comes to the consequences of the corona pandemic, she calls for more investments in the health system and in educational institutions for children. According to the Greens boss, not only can the existing psychological consequences of the youngest be absorbed, but future pandemics can also be better managed.
Right in the middle of life
What stands out: It is mainly about topics that directly affect people’s reality. External security, financial policy or the most recent events in Afghanistan play little or no role. The moderators Ellen Ehni and Andreas Cichowicz rarely intervene, for example to ask people to focus on their questions when they wander.
Baerbock is on the move a lot in the studio, approaching people – she kneels in front of a wheelchair user. She digs deeper and poses counter-questions, even when it comes to unrelated issues, such as uranium ammunition that “the Americans” would shoot over Germany. It seems a bit deliberate, however, that Baerbock repeatedly promises to stay in contact with those asking questions or even to visit them, if necessary even after the election.
Scholz and Laschet next
The electoral arena puts the voters in the spotlight. One top candidate in each case has to answer voters’ questions in a broadcast. Baerbock kicked off, Olaf Scholz (SPD) will follow on Tuesday, and on September 15 it will be the turn of Union candidate Armin Laschet.
Part of the audience was selected by the opinion research institute Infratest dimap. In addition, viewers could apply with their questions. However, the candidates do not know either the questioner or the questioner.
