Due to construction work, the federal highway 23 near Grainau (Garmisch-Partenkirchen district) will be closed for around two weeks from Monday, September 16th. The reason for this is the relocation of the B23 to the newly built roundabout south of the Kramer tunnel, the Weilheim State Construction Office announced. Anyone wishing to drive via Garmisch-Partenkirchen towards the Austrian border must therefore prepare for longer detours. The signposted large-scale diversion leads via Füssen and Steingaden in the Allgäu and via Oberammergau.
The closure is expected to last until September 29th. As the construction work is dependent on the weather, there may be delays. The Kramer Tunnel is intended to relieve Garmisch-Partenkirchen, which is plagued by traffic jams, of through traffic. According to previous information from the building authority, up to 16,000 vehicles drive through the town on federal highway 23 every day. Federal highway 2 in the east is also very busy. The Wank Tunnel is planned as a bypass there.
