Zimmer last made it into the Oscar finals in 2018 – he owed his eleventh nomination to the score for Christopher Nolan’s war drama “Dunkirk”. In 1995 Zimmer received the Oscar for “The Lion King”.

Director Denis Villeneuve brought the German special effects artist Gerd Nefzer on board for the visually stunning scenes of “Dune”. After the preselection, the film is now one of ten candidates for a special effects Oscar. Born in Swabia, Nefzer won one of the coveted trophies for “Blade Runner 2049” in 2018.

The Jordanian director Murad Abu Eisheh, a graduate of the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy, can hope for an Oscar in the “Live Action Short Film” category. His film “Tala’vision” is among 15 shortlisted candidates, with a total of 145 short films to choose from. Eisheh had already been awarded a student Oscar in October. His half-hour film tells of the life of eight-year-old Tala in war-torn Syria and of the importance of a television for the girl.
