For 90 years, General Motors consistently sold the most cars in the United States. Now the US group has been overtaken in its home market for the first time: In 2021, Toyota rose to number one in the US car market.

It has never been done before: For the first time in the history of the American automotive industry, a foreign company has left domestic manufacturers behind. The Japanese company Toyota brought around 2.3 million cars to buyers last year, about 114,000 more than General Motors (GM).

Toyota increased its sales in the US by ten percent, while GM sold 13 percent fewer cars than in the previous year. Sales collapsed in the last quarter of the year in particular.

GM ousted from the top after 90 years

For 90 years, GM had led the sales in the US, as the trade magazine “Automotive News” reports. But Toyota apparently coped better with the delivery bottlenecks in chip production in 2021. Ford should be in third place.

BMW increased its sales in the USA by almost 21 percent and sold around 340,000 vehicles of the core brand. Other German manufacturers have not yet published their figures.

Turning point? Toyota sells more cars in the US than GM
