After years of wrangling and strife, Renault and Nissan have put their joint alliance on a new footing. In addition to a reorganization of the ownership structure, the partners, which include the Japanese carmaker Mitsubishi as a third party, announced close cooperation in electromobility. “This far-reaching program paves the way for the renewal and strengthening of this 24-year-old partnership, creating a new spirit and leveraging the technologies of all three alliance members,” they said in a joint statement. The cost benefits are estimated at between a few hundred million euros within a few years and a few billion by 2030. As part of the deal, Nissan committed to owning up to a 15 percent stake in Renault’s new EV and software division, Ampere. Mitsubishi is also considering investing in Ampere, whose IPO Renault is aiming for in the second half of the year.
