The global shortage of semiconductors severely slowed the automotive industry in the past year. Nevertheless, BMW sells more cars than ever before.

In 2021, the BMW Group sold more than 2.2 million BMW brand cars for the first time – despite the global shortage of semiconductors. Sales Director Pieter Nota said: “With the BMW brand, we are also number one in the global premium segment – and by a considerable margin.”

The group as a whole, which also includes the Mini and Rolls-Royce brands, “achieved solid sales growth” for the year as a whole, said Nota, and was confident about the current year: “We expect further profitable growth in 2022.” BMW wants to present the full sales figures in a week.

An important growth driver in the group was the ramp-up of e-mobility, said Nota. With the delivery of more than 100,000 fully electric vehicles, the announced goal has been achieved.

After just nine months, BMW had set new records with sales of 1.932 million cars, sales of 82.8 billion euros and earnings of 13.2 billion euros before taxes.
