Augustin Hadelich recorded Benjamin Britten’s Violin Concerto – Culture

Of

Harold Eggebrecht

This album revolves around a piece that was created under the impression of the Spanish Civil War 1936-39. The 26-year-old Benjamin Britten composed the violin concerto for the Spanish violinist Antonio Brosa, who premiered it in 1940 at Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic under John Barbirolli. The piece has long been one of the most important works of the genre. At least there is a radio recording of Antonio Brosa from 1952. He plays with the BBC Scottish Orchestra under Ian White, and it sounds supple, very slender in tone, measured, even reserved in expression, without making the piece any smaller.
